Withdrawal-Unpin

Postby garykevinware » 13 May 2010, 2:22 am

In last week's problem, we showed an example of a fivefold unpin of the White Queen, by Interference. In this week's problem, there are five unpins of the queen by withdrawal, and one by interference, for a total of six unpins.

H.W. Bettmann Good Companions 1919 (Version) #2

2 points for sending me a complete variation. There are also bonus problems under both Knight Wheel and Interference-Unpin, worth a possible 13 points, and so 15 points are possible this week. Send your solutions to me, at garykevinware@yahoo.com , by next Wednesday.

Here is the answer to last week's problem:
Bettmann #2-
1 Qxd4 Qxg5 2 Qd3#
1...Qf3 2 Qd7#
1...Qxg3 2 Qe4#
1...Qxe5 2 Qxe5
1...Qf4 2 Qxf4#
1...Nb6 2 Qg4#
1...Qxd4+ 2 Nxd4#
1...Qf2 2 Qxf2#
1...Qg1 2 Bc2#
1...f6 2 Be6#
Here is another Withdrawal-Unpin for you to solve:

Here is the answer to last week's bonus problem:
Heathcote #2-
1 Ke5 Qxg6 2 Qxg6#
1...Qa7 2 Qf5#
1...Ne3 2 Nxg3#
1...Ra8 2 Bg4#
1...Bh4 2 Rxh4#
1...Bf2 2 Rf5#
The White King walks into no less than four pins, all of which are released by defenses to the threat, Kd4, and result in distinct mates.
Another example of a withdrawal-unpin, is the problem by Bottacchi, under Study! Study! Study!
