Castles In The Air

Postby garykevinware » 24 June 2010, 1:56 am

This week's theme is semi-related to last week's theme, but in this case, castling is involved in the variations. If I were to say that the key move was castling, that would make it too easy!

G.F. Anderson Natal Mercury 1919 #3

Wolfgang Pauly "Properties of Castling" 1928 #3

3 points each for sending me a complete variation to each problem, and 1 bonus point each, by sending me two variations each, involving different castling moves by White. Therefore, 8 points are possible, by sending me your solutions, at garykevinware@yahoo.com , by next Wednesday. There are also bonus problems, under both Good Grief! and Can't Castle, worth a possible 15 points, and so 23 points are possible this week.

Here are the answers to last week's problems:
Anderson #3-
1 b8=B Kf3 2 0-0+ Ke3 3 Bf4#
1...f5 2 Bf4 Kf3 0-0#
"The second variation (in which White reverses the moves of the first) shows why 1 b8=Q fails--2 Qf4 would be stalemate. Under-promotion goes pleasantly incombination with the odd Castling move."
Pauly #3-
1 Bf6 exf6 2 0-0 fxg5 3 Rae1#
1...exd6 2 0-0-0 dxc5 3 Rhe1#
"A neat piece of work. Tries are stopped by moves of the f-pawn, making a "hole" for the Black K. Pauly, a great Romanian composer, is equally expert in Bohemian model-mate composition, as in tasks of the above nature."
